Wood Flooring demand spreading, domestic producers gain

The acceptance & demand of wood and laminate flooring is growing steadily in India market, which is widely recognized in retail as well as project segment. Laminate flooring is particularly popular pan India and is used in every kind of spaces like hotels, restaurants, sports facilities, offices etc. Once limited to colder regions, wood flooring has gripped the nation with its presence everywhere. Undoubtedly, tiles are the favourite of Indian homes but we have observed that hospitality & residences definitely opt for laminate, linoleum or wood flooring in master bedroom and kids room. Lots of economical grade wood flooring are being imported from China, but their quality is well accepted in market. The economy range market is titled towards Chinese product as they are cheap and have networks to supply directly to big builders. Chinese suppliers are aggressive in slashing prices due to pressure mounting from slowdown in sales and dispatches. There is report that in India major market share is captured by Chinese products, however, now the trend is slowly changing and people like to use quality product of international repute.

The growth in wood & laminate flooring is also driven by affordable prices especially from Indian and Europeans products. Earlier, high priced flooring solution was coming into the Indian market ranging from Rs.250 to 300/sq ft, but now it is available between Rs.50 to 70 sq/ft range, which is economical and better than other flooring options such marble, ceramic etc.

It is noted that Government of India has initiated investigation of Anti-Dumping duty on imports of ‘Veneered Engineered Wooden Flooring” originating in or exported from China, Malaysia, Indonesia and European Union in February 2017 on the wake of Greenlam Industries Limited filed application for imposition of anti-dumping duty on imports. If Anti-dumping duty is imposed, there is an opportunity for other India companies to enter into Veneered Engineered Wooden Flooring manufacturing.
