Fire Prevention Measures for Plywood Industry

Monday, 12 May 2025

Fire prevention in a plywood factory is critical due to the high risk posed by wood dust, adhesives, and other combustible materials. Here are key preventive measures enumerated by Mr Alok Mohta, KGPLDA/ABPLTA.

1. Housekeeping & Dust Control

  • Install dust extraction systems to prevent wood dust accumulation.
  • Regularly clean machines, ducts, and floors to remove dust and debris.
  • Avoid storing sawdust or wood scraps for long periods; dispose of them safely.

2. Electrical Safety

  • Use explosion-proof electrical fittings in high-risk areas.
  • Regularly inspect wiring and replace damaged cables immediately.
  • Ensure proper earthling of all machines to prevent static sparks.

3. Storage & Handling of Flammable Materials

  • Keep adhesives, varnishes, and chemicals in fire-resistant cabinets.
  • Keep fuel and chemicals away from production areas.
  • Use non-sparking tools in areas where flammable vapors may be present.

4. Fire Detection & Suppression Systems

  • Detection Systems
  • Install smoke detectors and heat sensors in all key areas.
  • Implement a fire alarm system with emergency sirens and flashing lights.
  • Install an automatic sprinkler system, especially in high-risk zones.
  • Keep fire extinguishers (ABC type for wood and chemical fires) at all key locations.
  • Set up fire hydrants and ensure access to an adequate water supply.
  • Use CO2 or foam suppression systems for chemical storage areas.

5. Emergency Preparedness & Training

  • Conduct fire drills and train workers on evacuation procedures.
  • Designate a fire response team among employees.
  • Ensure clear and well-lit emergency exits with no obstructions.
  • Provide workers with fire-resistant PPE (gloves, masks, and clothing).

6. Structural Safety Measures

  • Use fire-resistant materials in building construction.
  • Keep aisles clear for easy evacuation and fire truck access.
  • Install fire doors and shutters to contain fires in specific areas.
