Surge in Sea Freight from China taking a toll on Décor and Panel Products

The prices of Acrylic, ASA Sheets, RM for HPL, WPC etc imported from China hit hard

The notable surge in sea freight rates, following the ongoing geopolitical conflicts in West Asia has created a challenging logistics scenario for India’s laminate and décor products industry such as Acrylic laminates, ASA sheets, Raw materials for WPC/PVC products, decorative laminate imported from China etc.  As reported,  higher shipping charges upto 300 % i.e. over 5400 USD per container have increased the landed cost of imported chemicals, raw materials, decorative papers, foils, and other basic materials, which ultimately adds up in the overall cost of finished goods.

For manufacturers and importers, rising freight costs can put pressure on profit margins and may eventually result in higher product prices. Longer transit times and supply-chain uncertainty can also encourage companies to maintain higher inventory levels, increasing working-capital requirements. Key chemical imports like Melamine, Phenol, and Methanol (essential for manufacturing formaldehydes and resins) rely heavily on containerized maritime transport. Global logistics bottlenecks squeeze supply, frequently doubling local chemical prices.

Overall, a sustained rise in sea freight is likely to remain an important cost and supply-chain consideration for India’s laminate and décor products industry and logistics shocks can  trigger immediate operational stress.
