The Plant Will Cut Import Dependence of Laminate & Panel Industry
India's plywood, laminate and resin industries could benefit from improved domestic availability of phenol following the commissioning of a Rs.6,000-crore phenol and acetone plant at Haldia, West Bengal.
Developed by Adperma Private Limited, a subsidiary of Haldia Petrochemicals Limited, the facility has an annual production capacity of 3.45 lakh tonnes of phenol and 2.15 lakh tonnes of acetone.
Phenol is a key raw material for manufacturing phenolic resins used in plywood bonding and certain laminate applications. Increased domestic supply could help resin manufacturers reduce dependence on imports, minimise supply-chain disruptions and improve raw-material availability.
As of now, the Indian plywood and laminate industry is heavily depended on the imported chemical for resin manufacturing, This new facility could also strengthen both India's wood panel and downstream chemical industry by supporting domestic manufacturing and reducing exposure to international supply fluctuations.
The key benefit will depend on production levels, domestic supply allocation and pricing. If the plant delivers consistent supplies at competitive rates, it could strengthen the domestic wood-panel industry's supply chain and long-term competitiveness.
